Happy Axe
Canberra musician Emma Kelly AKA Happy Axe brings her unique brand of Ambient Pop to Castlemaine. Using violin, musical saw, voice and digital manipulation, listening to Happy Axe is a hypnotic experience. Deft melodies and atmospheric loops cascade and fold themselves around you. Entrancing patterns form and then dissolve.
"You're an alternate reality Happy Axe. The strings consume this with drama, it'll leave you feeling unsettled and wanting more to explore. This is next level." - Claire Mooney, Triple J
"...she crafts an experimental electronic soundscape that feels intangible in its pristine, strange beauty, similar to a Paul Thomas Anderson film or BJÖRK’s work on Homogenic." - Kyle Fensom, Purple Sneakers
Julia Johnson
Julia Johnson is an Australian singer, songwriter and multi instrumentalist. Autumn 2017 saw Johnson’s first musical release “Melissa” since folding her long-standing country-folk band, the Deep Sea Sirens.
Keeping hold of her menagerie of traditional folk instruments, Julia has put down her guitar to delve further in to autoharp, synths, banjo, and her vintage Casiotone MT-65.
The past few years have been spent between Johnson’s hometown Canberra, Berlin and Sydney, where she is currently based.
“Love the playful guitar plucking and that lilt of Julia’s voice” – Zan Rowe, TripleJ
“This confidently straddles the lines between slightly folk-tinged, rustic sounds and a bright-eyed pop sensibility, with good lyrics to boot. Can see this going nuts with a slightly older triple j crowd.” Al Newstead, TripleJ
